"I explore the essence of art and am fascinated by the "why".
Begoña Lafuente is a painter and draughtswoman living in the Netherlands whose works have been exhibited both nationally and in Spain. For her, art is a timeless conversation in which not everything is said and "the essential is diluted". Lafuente describes her work as a play of combinations, combining materials, textures and colours, improvising new pathways for the senses. She also integrates movement and contrast into her compositions to promote visual and emotional tension.

Begoña Lafuente, (Spain, 1969) is a visual, graphic and multimedia artist. She currently develops her main creations in her studio on the North Sea in the Netherlands. Her career is based on the roots of graphic design she developed in Madrid in the early 1990s, at a key moment for the discipline when it reached the realm of expressive art within and beyond the realm of corporate image in Spain. Begoña combines her classical and artistic training as a Fine Arts graduate with the latest trends in representation in a constant research work, expanding her experience as a graphic designer, art director and illustrator for different companies in the field of corporate identity and advertising. In 2009, she relocates to the Netherlands. Here she interacts with local and international artists from different fields and integrates a new reality into her art, which she fuses with excerpts from the Spanish school in her works. She plays with different techniques such as painting, collage, drawing, photography, scans and monoprints. Man as a symbol of expression is a constant in her art; she creates an emotional and visual tension through the use of thematic contrasts, colour clashes and biological forms against geometric shapes, all representations of an ever-changing nature. Her portfolio also includes recognisable forms of the great masters of art history from a contemporary perspective. She frequently participates in local and international art fairs and exhibitions, and her works are in private collections throughout Europe and the United States of America.

Before I start painting, I take photos of the interesting parts that were fleeting at the time but that I have since wanted to transform into something different, new and permanent. These portraits, diaries of the recovered fragments of my stroke, represent the inner world of my thoughts on that particular day when I was working on a painting that became another version of myself.
When I paint, I often know that there are parts of my work that I have to sacrifice in favour of the composition of the whole

Each painting has simultaneous stories happening in different layers. Sometimes everything starts with an idea and a draft on paper, and other times a painting “is” the physical base of another one. In this space you will mostly find mix media artworks, having used a palette knife, with acrylics, and collage. Different media behaves in their own, individual way, and Begoña allows the strength of each medium to contribute to the overall expression of the piece.
